The Pain of Death
When playing games sometimes players go on wild killing sprees. Now however much fun this sounds like, it cannot happen without consequences. Many times there are "evil" guards who we kill without a second glance, but even the "evil" guards probably have a wife and kid at home.
Now, I'm not saying that we have to go to the extreme with this and say "Don't kill anyone or anything; especially that tree over there." I'm just saying that killing rapidly and randomly have consequences. Maybe players don't get the information they would have gotten if they would have interrogated the person first. Maybe the players could use a captured foe as a mole into the bad guys instead of killing them. There are lots of uses for live bad guys.
Players should also think like their character. Their characters are, for the most part, sentient beings and probably are fairly wary of taking life needlessly. Only sadistic people take life for the fun of it, and that's not what we're promoting here with this game.
But there is a time and place for killing. For instance a huge monster that is solely evil in intent and trying to bite your head off. Maybe you should think about slashing it to bits. Or in times of war when one country is attacking there is a need for defense and killing.
One of the most important people to kill is usually the main bad guy. However it could be interesting to see a main bad guy turn good. It has happened the other way around where a main good guy turns bad, but it would be interesting to flip it. On the other hand, if players don't kill the main bad guy it would make sense for that bad guy to keep on being a bad guy and trying to kill the players. Sort of like a super-villian in cartoons.
My point is that killing and death is part of this game, but not the only point. Statements like "I guess I should kill him since I'm an Anti-paladin," aren't exactly true. Players should take a hard look at any situation and understand the consequences of death in the life of their game.
